Mekesha & Ramon

Mekesha Pearson and Ramón Woodcock are pleased to announce their plans to wed on September 4, 2011.

Mekesha, the daughter of Robert & Ladawna Pearson, is a native of Jacksonville, NC. She is pursuing a master’s degree in speech pathology and is employed as a risk management account manager.

Ramon, the son of Winston & Gloria Woodcock, is a native of Bronx, NY. He is a union and labor relations organizer for the state of New York.

“We meet the night before Ramon was supposed to move back to NY,” Mekesha recalls. “With Ramon’s Panamanian background and my love of diverse cultures, it is no wonder we meet at a local café for salsa night.

“Within 15 minutes of arriving, Ramon spotted me and asked me to dance. Since I do not look like I have a Latin background, his realization that I was well versed in Spanish sealed the deal.

“We danced all night. To my surprise, I learned much later that we met the night before Ramon was supposed to move back to New York. He decided to extend his stay here so we could get to know each other better.

“When we get married, we will have been together five years. Three of those years have been long distance. I guess you could say we have stacked up a lot of frequent-flier miles!.

“When Ramon decided to propose, he had to be creative. We are such laid-back people; if Ramón had tried to take me anywhere fancy, I would have caught on, so he decided to propose on my birthday.

“I was turning 28 and he was flying into town. He said he wanted to have a nice celebration and that all of my family and some of our friends could meet at our favorite restaurant.

“We did the round of gifts and he had gotten me some big-ticket items, so I had absolutely no idea what was going on. He got up to thank everyone for celebrating with us and then got down on one knee.

“Everything inside me crumbled and soared at the same time. He was asking me to spend the rest of our lives together!

“My heart stopped, my breath caught, and the blood rushed in my ears. I get butterflies in my stomach. It was like meeting him for the first time all over again. I was thinking, ‘It’s my time to step up to the plate. Will I strike out or make a home run?’

“Then I was blinded by the beauty of my ring sitting in a tiny box. I watched him slide it on my finger and I knew I never wanted to take it off. My symbol that someone chose ME to be his life partner, his kitchen mate, a mother figure to his child, to fill the space next to him in church, to be his navigator on trips and biggest fan in life.

How could I say no? I am in love! Whether the fire is a raging inferno or a quietly flickering flame, I am in love!"
